Biography Summary: Catherine of Aragon (1485 - 1536) was famous for being the first wife of King Henry VIII.
Although Catherine was originally married to Arthur, when Arthur died unexpectedly five months after the pair had married, in order that Henry VII would not have to return her dowry, a marriage between Catherine and the new heir apparent, Henry VIII took place after a dispensation was given by the Pope.
Unable to birth a living male child for her husband, Henry was forced to put her aside under the guise of annulment to be able to remarry and have sons.
After twenty four years of marriage Henry proclaimed himself Supreme Head of the Church of England and declared their marriage invalid.
Until the day Catherine of Aragon died she would not concede that was anything other than Henry’s lawful wife and Queen of England.
