Jules Verne Fact 1: Jules
Verne was born on February 8th 1828
and during the 19th century period
in history when many empires across
the globe collapsed, the Spanish,
first and second French, Holy Roman,
Mughal and Chinese but the British
and Russian Empires, the United
States and German Empire where on
Jules Verne Fact 8: During his second year in Paris it was a time of great political upheaval with the French Revolution of 1948 and the subsequent French Second Republic took power. Before long Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte would have himself crowned ruler of the Second French Empire.
Jules Verne Fact 9: Around this time he also began to suffer quite severely with stomach cramps which would continue throughout his lifetime. He also suffered with facial paralysis that would occur on four occasions which would ultimately be diagnosed as being caused by a middle ear inflammation.
Jules Verne Fact 10: By
January of 1851 however he did
graduate with a license en droit and
completed his study of the law.
Jules Verne Fact 15: In 1856, while attending a friend at his wedding, Jules was invited to stay with the bridges family and not only did he befriend the entire family he also would fall in love with the brideís sister, Honorine de Viane Morel. When her brother offered him a job as a broker, with his fatherís reluctant approval he went into business and married Honorine in January of 1857.
Jules Verne Fact 16: He had an opportunity in 1858 to travel for free and it would be the first time he had ever left the shores of France. They traveled from Bordeaux to Liverpool to Scotland. Another opportunity arose in 1861 to go to Stockholm and on to Christiania and on to Telemark but Verne had to return from Denmark and still was too late to be present when his son was born.

All the while Verne was researching
his geography and writing stories
and in 1862 he met Pierre-Jules
Hetzel a publisher and someone who
would not only become Verneís
publisher but also a great
influence. Often, especially early
on, Hetzel suggested changes which
Jules was happy to make but they
vehemently disagreed on Jules
biggest project to date which was
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the
Sea of the lead character who was
written as a Russian. Hetzel did not
want to alienate their Russian
readers and so pressed Verne to
change his character past. They
finally came to a compromise which
saw Verne leave the Captainís past a
