Karl Marx Fact 1: He was born on May 5, 1818 in Trier, Kingdom of Prussia's Province of the Lower Rhine in the German Confederation. He was born into a middle-class family and his birth address was 664 Brückergasse.

Karl Marx Fact 2: His parents were called Heinrich Marx (Herschel Mordechai) and Henrietta Pressburg. His father was a lawyer, he belonged to the middle-class and he was fairly wealthy. His mother was a Dutch Jewish woman who was dedicated to family life, her motherly love was thought to be excessive.

Karl Marx Fact 3: He had eight siblings of whom he was the third eldest. The names of his surviving brothers and sisters were Sophie, Hermann, Henriette, Louise, Emilie and Karoline.

Karl Marx Fact 4: His baptism into the Lutheran Church was held in 1824. His brothers and sisters were also baptized into the Lutheran Church.

Karl Marx Fact 5: Historians are unable to establish a great deal of information regarding his childhood. However, historical records confirm that he was home schooled until the age of 12. His education was provided by his father, Heinrich.

Karl Marx Fact 6: At the age of 12, he attended school for the first time at Trier High School. His headmaster was called Hugo Wyttenbach and he was friends with his father, Heinrich.

Karl Marx Fact 7: Numerous staff members were replaced during the years in which he attended Trier High School. Many of the teachers at the school were liberal humanists. This meant that their attentions were focused highly upon 'humanism' - a term which places emphasis on the value of human beings. Police discovered that literature relating to political liberalism had been made available to students within the school, and as a consequence, some staff members were replaced.

Karl Marx Fact 8: He wasn't obliged to join the military at the age of 18, like other young men, as he had a 'weak chest' condition which excused him from joining.

Karl Marx Fact 9: He wanted to study literature and philosophy but his father pushed him towards studying law. He attended the University of Bonn from October, 1835, when he was 17 years old.

Karl Marx Fact 10: At the University of Bonn, he was able to join a group known as the Poets’ Club. Some of the group’s members were being monitored by the law as they were political radicals.

Karl Marx Fact 11: His grades suffered after his second term at the University of Bonn. He also became involved in a serious dispute with a member of the university’s Borussian Korps. Following this, his father demanded that he transfer to the University of Berlin where he could focus more on his studies.

Karl Marx Fact 12: He married an educated baroness of the Prussian ruling class on June 19, 1843. Her name was Jenny von Westphalen and they had known each other since childhood. Despite their ‘class’ differences, their relationship had begun several years prior to their marriage. Karl Marx had befriended Ludwig von Westphalen, Jenny’s father, who was a liberal aristocrat.

Karl Marx Fact 13: He became involved with a group called the ‘Young Hegelian’ after he moved to Berlin in 1836. The group was also known as the Left Hegelians and its members were German intellectuals who wrote about the legacy of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel.

Karl Marx Fact 14: He wrote a number of novels, dramas and poems during his lifetime. By 1837, he had written a novel called ‘Scorpion and Felix’ and a drama called ‘Oulanem’.

Karl Marx Fact 15: He completed his doctoral thesis in 1841. The title of his comparative study was ‘The Difference Between the Democritean and Epicurean Philosophy of Nature’. It was a controversial essay which was described as ‘a daring and original piece of work in which Marx set out to show that theology must yield to the superior wisdom of philosophy.’

Karl Marx Fact 16: Following a move to Cologne in 1842, he began writing for Rheinische Zeitung, translation Rhineland news, a radical newspaper. Through his articles, he was able to express his opinions on socialism and economics.

Karl Marx Fact 17: He was a very influential figure whose theories have impacted greatly upon the history of humans. He believed in toppling capitalism and argued that the working class should arrange revolutionary action. He has influenced people across the world including academics, labor unions and political parties.
