It is known he
suffered a bullet wound to his chest and
although the bullet was not removed the
suggestion was that he died from an
infection caused by the wound. His paintings

surmised perhaps because Van Gogh
had moved in with an alcoholic
prostitute who was pregnant and had
a daughter of five year. Unhappy
with his sonís choices, Van Goghís
father pressured him to leave the
woman. After a year he did so.
Vincent van Gogh Fact 17: He painted largely in earthy shades in particular dark brown and he would largely stick to muted shades.
Vincent van Gogh Fact 18: In 1886 he headed for Paris and studied at the studio of Fernand Cormon. While in Paris he came upon the work of Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli and so admired the lighter coloration of his work he changed his own palette to include brighter shades.
Vincent van Gogh Fact 19: By 1888 he moved again, this time to Arles, seeking respite from a smokerís cough and the effects of drinking too much alcohol.
Vincent van Gogh Fact 20: He successful persuaded Gauguin to visit and later to remain with Van Gogh and they began to paint together in Arles. Gauguinís character however would see the pair part ways, he was domineering and arrogant and often this led to arguments between the two.
Vincent van Gogh Fact 21: It was during this time that it appears Van Gogh suffered some form of breakdown. The exact details are unknown, but what is known is that he himself cut off his left ear. He wrapped his ear in paper and his head in a bandage and took his ear to a local brothel frequently visited by Gauguin apparently.
Vincent van Gogh Fact 22: He returned to his home where he collapsed and was found by the police the following day and taken to the hospital. Shortly thereafter he was section. In 1889 at his own request, he was transferred to a former monastery in Saint-Remy. His health continued to be contrary, some days were good, others not so much
Vincent van Gogh Fact 23: He left the clinic in Saint-Remy in 1890 and moved to Auvers-sur-Oise to be neared his brother Theo and his physician. All throughout his illness he continued to paint but when times were very tough he would no longer write.

It is said he shot himself but did not die immediately. He managed to walk back to his lodging house where he was attended to although the bullet could not be removed.
